Don't Quit Your Day Job? (Happy 4th!)
"The hardest part of gaining any new idea is sweeping out the false idea occupying that niche." Robert Heinlein
I read a great opinion piece from a songwriter recently who argued against the concept of wanting to “become” a songwriter. He said that the distinction between a “part-time” songwriter and a “full-time” songwriter is simply a matter of time. It is not a matter of who he is.

He said that his day-job is his “part-time job.” He is a songwriter 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He only “works” eight hours a day. Now that’s something to think about. Did you ever view your life from that perspective? I didn’t.

Let’s take it one step further: If I accept his premise, that I am a songwriter 24-7, then all that “goal-speak” and “act like a professional and you will become a professional” internal-speak that many motivational speakers purport takes on a new light. If I already “am” a songwriter, then I don’t have to “act” like a “real” songwriter to become a songwriter.

Sounds pretty simple … or is it? Accepting his premise is, well, not so easy. I thought that real songwriters were “professional” songwriters, people who make their living by writing, either as a performing songwriter or a staff songwriter. It’s not in my internal vocabulary to think outside that box.

But maybe it’s worth considering … but no one in the music industry would consider me a real songwriter if I’m not doing this as a profession. And, if I accept that notion, then maybe I won’t do the hard work to become a real songwriter … as you can see, there is a lot of “stuff” to work through to change a perception about ourselves, for better or for worse. But, it’s is worth considering. Who knows, maybe he is right?
